The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a challenging area of
study in computer science that perennially fascinates students not
just with its current state but with its future protential as well.
Crossroads, the ACM's international student magazine, will explore
several areas within the field in its September 1996 issue. The
Crossroads editorial staff invites authors to submit AI survey
articles for this issue. Accepted articles will be published both in
hardcopy and in electronic form on Crossroads' WWW site.

We encourage authors to submit survey articles dealing with topics
drawn from three broad areas within AI: 1) perception and robotics, 2)
intelligent interfaces, and 3) reasoning. The following partial list
of topics included within each area is provided to give prospective
authors a general picture of each area.  It is by no means exhaustive;
other relevant topics will be considered.

   1) PERCEPTION & ROBOTICS
machine vision, speech recognition, robot design,
auditory scene analysis, robot control, etc.

   2) INTELLIGENT INTERFACES
      information retrieval, natural language processing,
intelligent tutoring systems, intelligent WWW search
      engines, etc.

   3) REASONING
planning, search, machine learning, logic, theorem
      proving, intelligent games, knowledge representation,
      neural nets, etc.

Submissions may range in length from 1500 to 6000 words. Articles should
be written for a general audience of undergraduate and graduate students
interested in computers, and should present at least two of the following:

  1) basic description of the kinds of problems being worked on
     in the AI topic
  2) the state of the art of research in this AI area
  3) the state of the art of commercial applications in the AI topic
  4) open problems or future research/commercial development trends
     in the AI topic

Interviews with AI researchers; reviews of AI-related books, software,
videos, or conferences; and opinion columns on AI-related issues are
also welcome.

We especially encourage students to submit articles. However, articles
written or coauthored by professionals will also be considered.

                             SUBMISSIONS

The submission deadline is Monday, May 6th. Submissions should be sent
via electronic mail to xrds-submit@acm.uiuc.edu. Do not send submissions
as MIME attachments. Drafts can be in HTML, ASCII, or LaTeX, but HTML is
preferred since it will be required for the final drafts. Articles must
not use any HTML extensions. The subject header should indicate the
submission's general AI area. Please see
http://www.acm.org/crossroads/doc/information/writing.html for more
information on submission formats.

Prospective authors are invited to send email to the guest editor
Frank Klassner (klassner@cs.umass.edu) indicating their intention to
submit an article. In this way we can keep everyone informed of any
changes in deadlines or formats. Questions about possible article
topics can also be sent to the guest editor.

                            NOTIFICATION

Accepted authors will be notified within about 3 weeks of the submission
deadline, and will have 2-3 weeks for revisions. Final drafts will be
due in early July.
