This is the announcement of the next meeting on
GEOMETRY DRIVEN DIFFUSION IN COMPUTER VISION AND IMAGE PROCESSING
which will be held at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Palo Alto, June 13-14 1996.
The meeting will be held in conjunction with the
Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR'96),
which is held in San Francisco ("The City"), June 16-20 1996.
The workshop is organized by Pietro Perona (Caltech),
Bart ter Haar Romeny (Utrecht University), and Guillermo Sapiro (HP Labs).

This is the fifth in a series of meetings. Previous meetings were
in Berlin (June 1993, ICCV), Cambridge-UK (Dec. 1993, Newton Institute),
Stockholm (May 1994, ECCV), and Brown University-RI (June 1995, ICCV).
The meetings are motivated by the existence of an ESPRIT/NSF grant
for transatlantic collaboration (1993-1996), between European
and American universities (Utrecht, Leuven, Las Palmas-Spain,
Paris-Dauphine, KTH-Stockholm, ETH-Zurich-Switzerland, Linkoping,
Caltech, Harvard, MIT, UC Berkeley, U. North Carolina, Brown U).

The meeting is open, and researchers in the areas below, but not limited
to, are encouraged to participate:

* scale-space theory
* anisotropic diffusion
* vector-valued diffusion
* non-linear PDE's
* axiomatic approaches to computer vision and image processing
* energy-based approaches
* curve and surface evolution
* theory and applications of wavelets
* numerical analysis
* differential geometry
* applications of the theories above

The main theme on previous meetings was multiscale analysis, both non-linear and
linear, in its many different mathematical and physics based
representations. The presentations and discussions focus on fundamental,
mathematical, physical and applied aspects of this field.

The meeting will have the form of a open forum, where new ideas can be
presented and where there is ample time for deep discussion. Previous
meetings, which all had this character, were much appreciated for
its depth and communication level. There will be no proceedings, freeing
the participants from this pressure, but a tutorial style of presentation
will be expected. Likely the plans for a second book of the consortium,
with contributions of others, will be discussed at this meeting.

Four invited speakers will give plenary talks.
The rest of the papers will be selected,
given the limited time of the meeting, by
the organizers, based on a submitted abstract (about 500 words), clearly
stating the relevance for this field.

Information about the consortium, its members, earlier meetings and a
recently jointly published book on "Geometry-Driven Diffusion" can be
found at the Diffusion WWW-page: http:\\www.cv.ruu.nl\Collaborations\...
This WWW-page will contains updates of the meeting as well.

LOCATION
========
The location of the meeting is Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo
Alto, California. HP Labs, the research facilities of the
Hewlett-Packard Company, are located 30 miles south of San Francisco
(CVPR'96), 20 miles south of San Francisco International Airport, and 20
miles north of San Jose International Airport. Transportation from both
airports is provided by a number of shuttle companies. HP Labs is 2-3 miles
>from Stanford Campus.

REGISTRATION
============

If you are interested in participation, or
have any question, please contact Guillermo Sapiro
at guille@hpl.hp.com.

Please provide the following information:

1- If you wish to give a talk. Provide title, abstract (about 500
words) and affiliation by email to: guille@hpl.hp.com.

2- If you just wish to attend.

3- When are you arriving, when are you leaving? How many hotel nights
   do you need? Are you sharing a room? With whom?

4- If you need any further information (like driving directions, clime, etc.)

Hotel accommodation:
===================
For the moment, we have reserved the Holiday Inn in
Palo Alto-Stanford for the meeting.
This hotel is at walking distance from downtown Palo Alto and Stanford
University. It is 5-10 minutes from HP Labs, and the hotel provides
transportation from/to the meeting (free).
Facilities at the Hotel are outstanding.
The rates are approx. $92 both for single and double rooms (prices
will change for '96, and may increase a couple of dollars).
Check out at the Holiday Inn has to be on Friday, last meeting day, for this
special price (check in can be any day).
In case you want to stay longer (CVPR starts Sunday), please contact
G. Sapiro at guille@hpl.hp.com for special arrangements.
Reservations should be made directly to the Hotel.
Phone: 1-415-328-2800
FAX:   1-415-327-7362
Rooms should be reserved before May 31, 1996. After this day, reservations
depend on availability (if rooms are still available, the same
price will be provided).
When making the reservation please provide the following information:
1) Your name and name of person sharing the room if any.
2) Credit card number to guarantee the reservation.
3) Arrival and departures dates.
4) Mention "Attn. Lori/Monica, Diffusion Workshop at HP Labs."
to obtain the special fare.
