           ICPR'96 Call for Tutorial Proposals
*********************************************************************

The ICPR'96 organizing committee invites proposals for the tutorial
program of the upcoming ICPR, which is to be held in Vienna, Austria,
August 25-30, 1996. We plan to offer 4 to 6 half-day tutorials on
Sunday, August 25, 1996 (the conference starts on Monday).

We are inviting suggestions for suitable tutorial topics and possible
speakers (including yourself) and/or to forward this announcement to
potential tutorial speakers.

A preliminary list of suggested topics that can be covered by tutorials
is given below, but this list should only serve as a guide. Other
topics, both related to these and possibly quite different from them,
will also be considered:

  AI methods in pattern recognition
  Computational Geometry
  Computing tools and environments
  Data mining
  Eigen-techniques
  Fractal techniques in pattern analysis
  Hierarchical methods in image understanding
  Image compression
  Image databases
  Invariants
  Neural networks in pattern recognition
  OCR
PR for computer graphics, multimedia, virtual reality
  Psychophysics, perception, cognition
  Real-time systems
  Robust statistical techniques
  Scale-space techniques
  Sensors
  Speech recognition
  Wavelets
  ...

As a reference, here is the list of tutorials that were held at ICPR'94
in Jerusalem:
  1. "Invariant Theory for Pattern Recognition" (O. Faugeras)
  2. "Neural Networks in Pattern Recognition" (Y. le Cun)
  3. "Document Image Analysis" (H. Baird and L. O'Gorman)
  4. "Statistical Pattern Recognition" (A. Jain)

Requirements for Submission:
A tutorial proposal should contain the following information:

+ A brief description of the tutorial, suitable for inclusion in the
  conference registration brochure;
+ A detailed outline of the tutorial and a description of why the tutorial topic

  is of interest to a substantial part of the ICPR audience;
+ The necessary background and the potential target audience for the tutorial
+ A brief resume of the presenter(s), which should include name, postal
address, phone and fax numbers, email address if available, background in the
tutorial area, any available example of work in the area (ideally, a published
tutorial-level article on the subject), evidence of teaching experience.

Those submitting a proposal should keep in mind that tutorials are intended to
provide an overview of the field; they should present reasonably well agreed-
upon information in a balanced way. Tutorials should not be used to advocate a
single avenue of research, nor should they promote a product.

This is the "financial package" for tutorial speakers:
1. Speakers will have their expenses reimbursed in the amount of US$ 1,000 per
tutorial. This can be done as payment of ICPR registration, hotel, and
airfare up to US$ 1,000, or cash payment upon presentation of receipts for
the above. Payment without such receipts may be subject to income tax.
2. For each attendant above 20, the speaker will get an additional US$ 50.
3. A tutorial may be cancelled in the event of insufficient pre-registration.
In this case ICPR'96 will have no financial obligation to the speakers,
but their ICPR'96 registration will be waved.

Please send all submissions before Jan. 1, 1996 to:
