mation)

With the emergence of communication and computer science synergies,
the interest for security issues is increasingly at the center of
attention. An important element in this is automatic authentication
of persons. The 1st International Conference on Audio- and Video-
based Biometric Person Authentication (AVBPA) will bring together
the speech and face recognition researchers in an attempt to con-
tribute to robust solutions for this challenging problem.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

The scientific programme will include the presentation of four invi-
ted talks and of contributed papers. Contributions covering the to-
pics below are solicited. However, all submissions addressing issues
related to person authentication with audio and/or video techniques
are encouraged. Main technical areas are:

Features and Measurements:
* Biometrics of face and voice
* Still image based features
* Multiple image based features
* Motion/depth based features
* Audio and lip-movements
* Text dependent audio features
* Text independent audio features

Decision Strategies for Audio- &Video-based Data:
* Training procedures
* Decision theory and strategies
* Fusion of multiple decisions

System Architecture and Hardware:
* Centralized versus distributed databases
* Image and speech communication
* Sensor resolution and recognition studies
* Tracking cameras
* Special sensors

Prospective contributors are encouraged to submit papers and to attend
AVBPA. Each paper will be reviewed by at least two reviewers. Accepted
papers will be presented in a combination of single track and double
track parallel sessions. All the presented contributions will be inclu-
ded in the proceedings volume, which will be published by Springer in
the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series in time for distribution
at the conference.

Invited Speakers:
Rama Chellappa (University of Maryland, USA) Sadaoki Furui (NTT, Japan)
John Mason (University of Wales Swansea, UK) Tomaso Poggio (MIT, USA)
