There are convenient air and surface transportation to Bhubaneswar. The area offers a number of fascinating activities for visitors: many historic shrines built by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains; a range of handicrafts and handwoven textiles, and opportunities for enjoying the distinctive art forms of this region. The areas around Bhubaneswar have several major attractions. The magnificent Sun Temple of Konark (known to generations of sailors as Black Pagoda) is internationally renowned. Puri and Konark have beautiful beaches, and the Chilika Lake, the largest brackish water inland lake in Asia, abounds with migratory birds and many varieties of fish. Close to Bhubaneswar is the Chandaka Forest, a sanctuary for wild elephants, and Nandankanan Zoological Park, a botanical garden that includes the largest lion and tiger safari in India. The Udayagiri and Khandagiri hills at the outskirt of the city have a network of man-made caves dating from the first century B.C.
