News Lodging ------- The participants can choose from a number of accommodation options, ranging >from very affordable to modest to luxurious. The conference contracted with UCSB for dorm spaces. The room rate is roughly $70 dollars per day for single occupancy and about $55 dollars per day for double occupancy plus tax, including three meals and fee parking on campus. The conference also contracted with local hotels in Goleta: Holiday Inn and Pacific Suites, which are within 5-minute driving distance from the campus. The room rate is in $80-$100 range. The participants can choose to stay at hotels in Santa Barbara (e.g., Four Seasons Baltimore, Santa Barbara Inn, El Encanto Hotel and Garden Villas, the Upham Hotel and Garden Cottages, etc.), which provide up-scale, luxurious accommodation at a higher rate. Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) The Santa Barbara Airport is located northeast of UCSB and can be reached via Ward Memorial to Sandspit Road (about 1/4 mile). United Airlines flies in and out of Santa Barbara, as does American Eagle, Skywest, U.S. Air Express, and United Express. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) The Los Angeles International Airport in located 100 miles southeast of UCSB and can be reached via Highway 101 and the 405 Freeway; (310) 646-5252. Santa Barbara Airbus Convenient round trip transportation between Los Angeles International Airport and Santa Barbara is available from the Santa Barbara Airbus. There are seven bus trips each day, with buses leaving Santa Barbara 4am-7pm. A one-way trip costs $32 if pre-paid at least 24 hours in advance ($35 non pre-pay price); round-trip is $60 if pre-paid ($65 non pre-pay). Hours every day: 7am-8pm; (805) 964-7759. Buses * Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) provides public transportation for the South Coast with bus routes from UCSB to Ellwood Beach, Isla Vista, Goleta, Santa Barbara, Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria. Most buses run every half-hour; weekend schedules differ. Printed schedules are available in Cheadle Hall and the UCen; (805) 683-3702. * The Greyhound depot is in Santa Barbara on the corner of Carrillo and Chapala Streets, next door to the local MTD Transit Center. Trips between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara take about two and a half hours and cost $12 one-way. From S.B. to San Diego it's about six hours and costs $25 one-way. To San Francisco it's nine hours and costs $29 one-way. About 10 buses leave each day from the S.B. depot in either direction. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis (reservations are not accepted) so it is advised that you arrive 45 minutes to 1 hour early to insure a seat; (805) 965-3971. Trains The Amtrak station is located at 209 State Street in downtown Santa Barbara. Amtrak offers two trains daily from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles, with connections to San Diego and to the east. Another train travels daily to Seattle and points between. Trips to Los Angeles cost $20 one-way and $25 round-trip. The trip to San Francisco costs $75 one-way, $82-$150 round-trip and takes nine hours. Trips to San Diego are 5-6 hours, cost $32 one-way, $39 round-trip and require a bus-to-train transfer in Los Angeles. Fares change depending on season and availability but there is usually a discount on round trip fares. Local Weather ------------ The weather in Santa Barbara around late June is usually sunny and pleasant, with daytime tempreature in the 70's and nighttime 40's to 50's. Casual clothing is in order with a sweater or light jacket occasionally needed for the evenings. UCSB is essentially a walking campus, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.
