 Theme of the special issue:
 The field of document image analysis has seen a tremendous growth in
 research and applications in the past ten years. Both academic
 researchers and the industry have been developing new algorithms and
 improving old ones utilizing the continuing increase in computer power.
 This Special Issue will focus on the state of the art in image
 processing and analysis as it relates to the storage, analysis and
 recognition of documents. We especially welcome papers describing novel
 architectures, comparing various algorithms and addressing real world
 problems (e.g. cheque image processing).

 Topics for papers in this special issue include, but are not limited to:
 *       color image processing
 *       image enhancement
 *       image compression
 *       document analysis
 *       character recognition
 * data mining in document image databases
 *       applications

 Timetable:
 Manuscripts due:                June 1, 1998
 Notification of acceptance: August 15, 1998
 Final version due: October 15, 1998

 All submitted papers will be reviewed according to the guidelines and
 standards of CJECE. Papers should be written according to the standard
 IEEE journal format. Four copies of submitted papers should be sent to:
