FIFTH EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER VISION

                             2-6 JUNE 1998
                   University of Freiburg, Germany

Following the highly successful conferences held in Antibes (ECCV '90),
Santa Margherita Ligure (ECCV '92), Stockholm (ECCV '94) and Cambridge
(ECCV '96) the Fifth European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV '98)
will be held from 2-6 June 1998 at the University of Freiburg, Germany.
The Conference is to be held under the auspices of the European Vision
Society (EVS).

                             The Program

ECCV is a single track conference consisting of highest quality,
previously unpublished, contributed papers, presented either orally or
as a poster. Contributions are sought on new and original research on
any aspect of computer vision, including but not restricted to the
following topics:

        - image features - object recognition
        - texture, shading, colour - active and real-time vision
        - visual motion, structure - visually guided robot
          from motion manipulation and navigation
        - stereo vision, calibration - medical imaging
        - surface geometry, shape - industrial applications
        - grouping and segmentation

All reviewing will be carried out double blind by a Program Committee
of leading international researchers selected by the Conference
Board. The proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the
"Lecture Notes in Computer Science" series.

Furthermore, as at previous conferences, a small number of special workshops
will be held on Saturday, June 6.

                        Instructions to authors

Submit in English four (4) copies of the paper by November 3, 1997 to:

ECCV '98 Conference Secretariat
Institut fuer Informatik
Universitaet Freiburg
79085 Freiburg
Germany

Each of the four copies must contain the following items:

  1. A title page containing:
     a) The title of the paper.
     b) The names and complete addresses (telephone, fax, email) of all
        authors.
     c) An abstract of up to 300 words clearly stating the impact of the
        contribution
(originality, importance, results, related work and how does it
        differ).
     d) A set of keywords.

  2. A second title page with only the title and abstract.
Authors and institution are not to be identified.

The body of the paper should be no more than 15 pages (12 point font)
including all text, figures and references. Coloured pages will be possible,
however, at the expense of the authors.

By submitting a paper to ECCV '98 the author(s) warrant that it, and any
related paper with essentially the same content, has not been and will
not be submitted to any other conference during the ECCV '98 review
period, 3 November 1997 - 9 February 1998.

                              Conference Venue

ECCV '98 will be held in the University of Freiburg being within
walking distance from the old town. Freiburg, located in a lovely
surrounding of the Black Forest, has one of the oldest Universities in
Germany founded in 1457 with an outstanding international reputation.
This classical University with long tradition has been recently
enriched with the foundation of a new 15th Faculty for Applied Sciences
consisting of two Institutes: The Institute of Computer Science which
will host the ECCV '98 and the Institute of Microsystem Technology.

Particular to Freiburg is the medieval Old Quarter with its
architectural treasures like the magnificent Gothic Cathedral (The
M"unster), colourful marketplace, intimate alleys and B"achle (little
waterways running through the streets). Over 23,500 students and a
rich program of festivals provide a very lively atmosphere. Being
situated in the "three country corner" where Germany, France and
Switzerland touch Freiburg also offers many opportunities for
interesting excursions e.g. by cable car up the mountain for
spectacular views of the Rhine Valley and the Swiss Alps. All these
make Freiburg one of the most attractive regions in Germany.
