 About the Conference

ICVGIP 98 is being started as a forum for exchange of ideas among
researchers, both national and international, and to promote future
research in the areas of Computer Vision, Graphics, Image Processing,
Visualization, Multimedia and Video Data Processing and allied areas.
The conference will feature presentations of reviewed papers in single
track, poster sessions and several invited talks by reputed experts.
 Scope

Current research in India in the areas of Computer Vision, Robotics,
Graphics and Image Processing is limited to a small group of
researchers, located mostly in IITs, IISc and R&D organisations.
Recently there has been a lot of interest in applying these techniques
to areas such as medical, aviation, manufacturing, automobile and other
industry. Presently, no society or organisation exists to collaborate
and conduct activities and conferences/seminars/workshops in these
areas. We envisage a great role of this forum in serving as a platform
for the purpose of making fellow researchers meet and disseminate
information. It is also expected that the conference will help in
generating interest in collaborative projects between academic
institutions, industry and the research laboratories.

 Role of Industry

Industry support is essential for the successfully hosting such
conferences. It also provides the industry with a platform to publicize
their products through demonstrations and presentations. Activities and
achievements of the industry in these fields can be highlighted, which
would result in better awareness and possible future
 interactions/collaborations.

 Plenary Session

 Invited Speakers:

 Oliver Faugeras (INRIA Sophia, France)
Research Director at INRIA in the Sophia Antipolis Research Unit, he
also leads the ROBOTVIS Group. Till summer 1996, he was "Maitre de
Conferences" at the ECOLE. He is also an Adjunct Professor in EE and CS
department at MIT and member of AI Lab. His current work and interests
are geometric approaches to computer vision, algebraic invariants,
motion and shape analysis, stereo and software environments.

 Katsushi Ikeuchi (University of Tokyo)
A Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Institute of Industrial
Science, the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, Dr. Ikeuchi has
previously worked at MIT and CMU. He has developed the "smoothness
constraint", a constraint to force neighboring points to have similar
surface orientations. Recently, his main focus is on developing Vision
Technologies that enable reduction in programming efforts.

 Jim Kajiya (Microsoft Corporation, USA)
Assistant Director of Microsoft Research, he is on the leading edge of
computer graphics technology. Instrumental in the introduction of the
Talisman, (microchip project) which enabled desktop PCs to display
high-quality 3D images, he is now working on the convergence of the
 television and the computer.

Chandrajit Bajaj (Center for Computational Visualization, University of Texas, Austin, USA)
Currently, he is Professor of Computer Sciences at University of Texas,
Visualization Chair, TICAM and Director of Computational Visualization
Center. His research interests are in the fields of computational
algebraic geometry, computer graphics, geometric design, scientific data
 visualization, and collaborative environments.

Sankar K. Pal (Machine Intelligence Unit, ISI, Calcutta)
Dr. S.K.Pal is Professor and founding Head of Machine Intelligence Unit
at the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta. He is a recipient of the
1990 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Sciences for his
contributions to Pattern Recognition. His research interests mainly
include pattern recognition, image processing, artificial intelligence,
