The IEEE Intelligent Vehicle Committee organizes an international symposium
once every year, in cooperation with other related institutions, in Detroit,
Tokyo, and Paris since 1989. These symposia have a single session format so
that all the attendees remain in a single room for multilateral communications
in an informal atmosphere. As another tradition, the meetings have enthusiastic
participation from industry as well as universities. Demonstrations of test
vehicles are strongly encouraged.
The topics cover:

* Sensing (Vision, Radar, Lidar, Sensor fusion, Image Understanding
           Algorithms, etc.)
* Control (Novel Nonlinear Control Concepts, Neural Nets, Fuzzy Logic, etc.)
* System Design (Integration of Intelligent Vehicles with Traffic Control,
           Navigation, etc.)
* Introduction Strategies for Intelligent Vehicles
* Communication and other related issues

We especially encourage participants from universities and companies with truly
innovative algorithms, systems, and concepts and analyses from interesting new
perspectives.

Please send three copies of a one-page abstract to Ichiro Masaki whose address
is included below. The deadline for the abstracts is March 15, 1998.

All the papers submitted to IV'98 will be forwarded to Alberto Broggi for
possible publication in the special issue of IMAGE AND VISION COMPUTING JOURNAL
on `Applications of Computer Vision to Intelligent Vehicles' which will be
guest-edited by Alberto Broggi and Ernst Dickmanns. For additional information
on the special issue, please contact
