CALL FOR PAPERS Autonomous Robots Special Issue on Perception-Based Intelligent Robots Sensing, perception and autonomous decision making are key ingredients for intelligent automation where the machine is faced with unexpected challenges and makes useful decisions. Example applications are perception-based navigation on land, in air and under water, space exploration, robot assistants for frail or handicapped people, service robots to automate hazardous tasks, etc. For the success of these applications vision plays an extremely important role for obstacle/hazard detection and avoidance, landmark acquisition and identification, object recognition, situation assessment, etc. One of the challenges has been to develop robust and reliable vision algorithms that can perform effectively under real-world application constraints. The focus of the special issue is to address a variety of research issues that are involved in developing vision-based robots and how some of these problems are mitigated by using sensor fusion, auxiliary and contextual information, motion cues, adaptation, etc. Contributions that combine a theoretical approach with intensive experimental evaluation are ideal, however, theoretical/conceptual papers are also invited. Possible topics for papers submitted to the special issue include, but are not limited to: - Sensor design, calibration, and stabilization - Sensor fusion for intelligent robots, including INS/GPS, digital map - Representation of visual information for robotic tasks - Generation and utilization of 3-D environment models - Sensor-based adaptive behavior and learning - Real-time sensing, distributed processing, cognition and control - Object recognition from a moving platform, model acquisition/update - Obstacle detection and avoidance, landmark recognition INSTRUCTIONS FOR MANUSCRIPTS Authors are encouraged to submit five copies of manuscript to the Guest Editor at the address given below. Papers must NOT have been published previously or submitted for publication to other journals.
