PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Purpose of Workshop
The purpose of this workshop is to provide an international forum for the
discussion of video representation and coding techniques being developed for
MPEG-4, MPEG-7, and beyond. Applications include videophone,
teleconferencing and telecollaboration, video over ATM, wireless, and the
Internet, interactive multimedia databases, remote sensing and surveillance,
and communication aids for the hearing impaired. To focus discussions, we
have selected as the main theme of this workshop: Visual Content Analysis
and Coding. Topics of special interest include
- Feature extraction
- Representation and coding
- 3D modeling and virtual reality
- Coding of topological data (meshes, boundaries, etc.)
- Segmentation
- Face encoder
- Content classification and identification
Format of Workshop
To facilitate the exchange of ideas and to maximize discussion, the workshop
will consist of a number of invited panels. Contributed papers will be
presented as posters.
Time and Venue of Workshop
This two-day workshop is scheduled right after the IEEE International
Conference on Image Processing, Chicago; and will be held at the Beckman
Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.

VLBV98 HOTEL & TRAVEL INFORMATION
Because there is a BIG TEN football game in Champaign-Urbana the weekend of
VLBV98, hotel rooms must be reserved earlier than usual (July 15 or
September 1).
Of the 2 hotels where room blocks have been reserved, the Hampton Inn is the
more conveniently located and we have reserved most rooms there. The
deadline for registration is, however, earlier at that hotel than at
Jumer's. You are advised not to wait until September to reserve a room.
Prices listed include tax.
-------------------------
1. Hampton Inn
1200 West University Avenue
Urbana, IL 61801, 800-426-7866 or 217-337-1100
$66.60/all rooms on 10/7 and 10/8. The cost goes up on 10/9 to $88.80.
Method of Reservation: Call the hotel directly. Whether you use the 800
(preferred) or the 217 number, you should refer to Group Name "VLB." The
block of rooms will be released on July 15! After that time, reservations
are taken on a first-come, first-served basis, and the group rate is not
necessarily honored.
About the Hotel: The Hampton Inn is a recently built hotel conveniently
located directly across the street (University Avenue) from the Beckman
Institute.
Shuttle Service, etc.: The hotel offers free continental breakfast, free
local phone calls, free in-room movie channel, and complimentary airport
shuttle service (7:00 AM - 10:00 PM). To take advantage of the shuttle when
arriving at the airport, use the courtesy phone and tell them you need a
ride. To use the shuttle going back to the airport, you will need to
preschedule a time.
Driving: If you are driving to the hotel: Exit 235A (University Avenue) from
I-57, then go 4 miles East. From I-74, exit 183 (Lincoln Avenue). It's one
mile south to University Avenue, then right 1/4 mile.
-------------------------
2. Jumer's Castle Lodge
209 South Broadway
Urbana, IL 61801, 800-285-8637 or 217-384-8800
$72.15/single, $82.14/double on 10/7 and 10/8; $102.12/single,
$112.11/double on 10/9 and 10/10.
Method of Reservation: Call the hotel directly. The 800 number gets the
central office; the 217 number gets the Urbana hotel. In either case, tell
them that you are with Group #78800. The block of rooms will be released on
September 1. After that time, group discounts are not honored. (There are
only 20 rooms reserved here, so it is advisable to make a reservation
earlier at the Hampton Inn.)
About the Hotel: Jumer's is an older hotel with "atmosphere" (it is
decorated in German Bavarian style), located at the Lincoln Square shopping
mall in Urbana. It is about a mile or a little less from the Beckman
Institute.
Shuttle Service: The hotel offers complimentary shuttle service, both within
town and to and from the airport. The shuttle needs to be prescheduled,
however. To take advantage of the shuttle when arriving at the airport, you
should call the hotel in advance and give them your arrival time. They will
then be there to meet you.
Driving: If you are driving to the hotel: I-72 turns into University Avenue,
Follow University to Race, turn right; Race goes directly to the hotel. From
I-74, take the Lincoln Avenue exit, go to Green, turn left and you will
eventually deadend at the hotel.
