CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Second International Symposium on Wearable Computers
October 19-20, 1998
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA
Initial Submissions Due by April 13, 1998
INVITATION
The International Symposium on Wearable Computers (ISWC) is the second
annual conference on wearable computing. The conference is sponsored
by the IEEE Computer Society. The purpose of ISWC is to bring
together researchers, product vendors, research sponsors, and others
to share information and advances in wearable computing. The
conference will include presentations, exhibitions, and poster
sessions.
We invite you to attend ISWC and to submit proposals for paper
presentations, posters, exhibitions, and demonstrations. The IEEE
Computer Society Press will publish the papers and poster summaries
in a conference proceedings. We will also publish all papers,
poster summaries, and exhibition summaries on the World Wide Web.
LOCATION
The conference will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA, at the Sheraton
at Station Square.
CONFERENCE TOPICS
The topics for ISWC may include:
o Applications, including affective computing, augmented
reality, computer-supported collaborative work,
computer-supported cooperative living, ubiquitous
computing, personal imaging, consumer applications,
industrial applications, medical applications, military
applications, and software agents
o Ergonomics
o Future of wearable computing
o Hardware, including head-mounted display technologies,
batteries, power management, heat dissipation
techniques, industrial design techniques, and
manufacturing & packaging issues
o Human interface issues, including hands-free user
speech recognition, mobility-challenged users, user
modeling, user evaluations, and health issues
o Networks, including wireless networks, on-body networks,
the World Wide Web, and networked vs. standalone
computers
o Operating system issues
o Social implications
o Software architectures
o Training, including performance support systems
PAPERS
We invite researchers to submit papers on the topics listed above or
other topics related to wearable computing. The authors of papers
that are selected for the conference will provide presentations
during the conference. To submit a paper, please do the
following:
o Write a paper that discusses the research, innovation,
or advance made by the author. Emphasize the unique
contribution of the work and how it will benefit
others. The paper should not exceed 4,000 words
(eight pages) in length. Include the author names,
affiliations, addresses, telephone numbers, and
electronic mail addresses. Also, identify the contact
person for the paper. When you write your paper, please
try to use the IEEE format that is described at
http://www.computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm. We
created a Word template that is a close match to IEEE's
format. The template is on the World Wide Web at
http://mime1.marc.gatech.edu/wearcon/call/ISWC-Pubformat.w6.0.doc
We also created a LaTex template, at
http://mime1.marc.gatech.edu/wearcon/call/ISWC-Pubformat.LaTex
o By April 13, 1998, send six copies of the paper
to Randy Pausch at the address below. If you wish to send
VHS videotape to help the reviewers, include 6 copies of a
brief (maximum five minutes) VHS videotape with your submission.
If your paper is accepted, we will ask you to submit the final
paper in both HTML and print formats. This will allow us to
put the paper on the conference's World Wide Web page and to
publish it in the conference proceedings.
POSTERS
We invite researchers, especially students, to submit summaries
for posters that describe current work related to wearable
computing. The number of posters that are accepted for the
conference will be limited by available space. To apply to
present a poster, please do the following:
o Write a summary of the research project that you
plan to describe in your poster. Please describe
the problem, your approach, and the significance of
your results. The summary should not exceed 1,000
words (two pages) in length. Be sure to include
the poster author names, affiliations, addresses,
telephone numbers, and electronic mail addresses.
Also, identify the contact person for the poster.
o By April 13, 1998, send six paper copies of the
poster summary to Randy Pausch at the address below.
If your poster is accepted, we will put the poster summary on
the conference's World Wide Web page.
EXHIBITIONS
We invite you to exhibit your products, services, or research
projects during the conference. Exhibitions will be
available continuously in a room (or rooms) near the meeting
room. Exhibitors will show their products and distribute
promotional literature to interested conference attendees.
Exhibitors may pay a fee for their booths.
The number of exhibitors that are accepted for the conference
will be limited by available space. To apply to be an
exhibitor, please do the following:
o Write a summary of the product, service, or research
project that you hope to exhibit. Describe why it
will interest the conference attendees. The summary
should not exceed 500 words (one page) in length.
Be sure to include in the summary the exhibitor
names, affiliations, addresses, telephone numbers,
electronic mail addresses, and World Wide Web page
location. Also, identify the contact person for
the exhibition.
o By April 13, 1998, send six paper copies of the
exhibition summary to Randy Pausch at the address below.
If your exhibition is accepted, we will put the exhibition summary
on the conference's World Wide Web page.
DEMONSTRATIONS
Unlike the more formal exhibitions, demonstrations will be on a space- and
time-available basis at the symposium. This is an opportunity to show
prototype hardware and works in progress to colleagues for comment in a
relaxed atmosphere. Paper presenters are highly encouraged to demonstrate
their work after their respective sessions. Accommodations (power, space,
etc.) will be limited, so participants should plan to be mobile and
self-supported. To apply to perform an informal demonstration, please do
the following:
o Write a one-paragraph-long summary that describes
what you plan to demonstrate. Be sure to include
the demonstration contact names, affiliations, addresses,
telephone numbers, electronic mail addresses, and World
Wide Web page location for the demonstration (if any).
o By date to be determined (but probably several weeks
before the symposium), visit the conference WWW page
for details on demonstrations at the conference.
