Call for Papers
              	    COMPUTER VISION AND IMAGE UNDERSTANDING 
 	
                	        	Special Issue on
        		Robust Statistical Techniques in Image Understanding
 
                		Submission Deadline: February 15, 1999 
 
 Data in image understanding problems is often too complex to be modeled 
 accurately. In the recent years robust vision algorithms have been developed 
 to circumvent this difficulty by employing robust estimators which allow the 
 modeling requirements to be relaxed. The estimators however were derived in 
 the statistics literature for much simpler data and their performance is not 
 guaranteed once underlying assumptions are violated. 
 
 Papers are solicited with focus on the theory and practice of using robust 
 statistical techniques to achieve more reliable solutions for image 
 understanding problems.  Application domains from any level of the visual 
 hierarchy (low/middle/high) are of interest. Submissions should adhere to the 
 following guidelines. 
 
       The basic computational module of the robust method has solid theoretical 
       foundations in statistics. 
 
       The performance improvement due to the robust method is demonstrated 
       quantitatively. 
 
       The conditions under which the robust method will perform reliably are 
       clearly established and the causes of possible failures are discussed. 
 
 The special issue is centered on robustness in image understanding.
 Papers addressing applications from related fields such as image processing 
 or pattern recognition will be considered in light of their impact on 
 designing better vision algorithms. Review papers, or papers dealing with more 
 theoretical issues are encouraged but should be strongly weighted toward image 
 understanding.
