********************************************************************** CALL FOR PAPERS COMPUTER VISION and IMAGE UNDERSTANDING Special Issue on UNDERWATER COMPUTER VISION AND PATTERN RECOGNITION GUEST EDITORS: Vittorio Murino, University of Verona, Italy Andrea Trucco, University of Genova, Italy THEME Underwater vision is undoubtedly a very difficult and challenging problem, regardless of the type of sensor used for image formation. The inherently structureless environment and the difficulties caused by the nature of the propagating medium have placed limitations on gaining an understanding of the underwater world. However, there is growing interest in investigating and, above all, in "understanding" the underwater scenes for many applications involving physical, biological, geological, archaeological, and industrial issues. This interest is currently increasing owing to the introduction of new and smarter imaging sensors that allow us to recognize and interpret the visualized scenes directly, as opposed to having to infer the structure from the raw signals. Therefore, together with marine specialists, an increasing number of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition scientists is currently approaching this environment and applying their expertise to discover new solutions to the problems linked to underwater vision. This special issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in this area. Our hope is to bring together in one place papers describing cutting-edge research. TOPICS The special issue will aim at gathering all the current research work for the understanding of the underwater environment, focusing on computer vision and pattern recognition issues and considering the processing of images acquired by EVERY KIND of imaging sensor (acoustical, optical, etc.). Possible topics for papers include, but are not limited to : - 2D and 3D Object Recognition - Shape Analysis and Shape from X - Range Image Analysis - Image Reconstruction and Restoration - Statistical, Syntactical and Structural Pattern Recognition - Pattern Analysis and Classification - Feature Extraction, Selection and Matching - Segmentation & Grouping - Low-Level Vision - Geometric Reasoning - AI Techniques - Energy Minimization Methods - Colour & Texture Analysis - Motion, Tracking and Stereo Analysis - Data Fusion and Multisensor Integration - Vision and Graphics SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Five copies of your manuscripts should be submitted to the guest editors at the address below.
