This sixth conference on Videometrics addresses developments and
applications of the state-of-the-art vision-based measurement and motion
capture technologies. Recent advances in three-dimensional displays and
computer-graphics hardware, and the increasing availability of modeling,
rendering, and animation software tools, have resulted in a growing demand
for high quality, fully automated techniques to generate the contents of 3D
 virtual worlds.
What distinguishes this conference from the numerous others on virtual
environments and 3D computer-assisted animation is the focus on achieving
the highest possible geometric and photometric accuracy from models and
motion. This involves creating mathematically precise complex objects and
scenes, by using system calibration, methods for automatic matching even in
complex scenes, and target-tracking techniques developed in the
Photogrammetry/Videometrics community. In addition, strategies for fully
automated planning of next best view, on-line assessment of model quality,
and use or computer graphics methods for image analysis, are of particular
 interest.
Producing realistic character animation requires high quality full-body
motion capture. Optical-based motion capture techniques are potentially
capable of producing the highest quality data without being affected by
environmental factors usually affecting other technologies such as
magnetic-based methods. However, improvement to the speed, increasing
reliability of automation by using computer-vision algorithms, overcoming
occlusion problems, and reduction of cost are required.

Papers on the following and related topics, are welcome:

 *	advances in practical system calibration techniques
 *	precision site modeling and assessment of model quality for
 	mapping and navigation
 *	automatic registration and strategies for next best view planning
 *	automatic matching algorithms of highly structured scenes
 *	high accuracy body/face motion capture for animation
 *	image matching and tracking in motion analysis
 *	representation and computer animation for artifacts and monuments
 *	successfully demonstrated image metrology applications.

 Paper Review
To ensure a high-quality conference, all abstracts and Proceedings of
SPIE papers will be reviewed by the Conference Chairs for technical
 merit and content.

 Publishing Policy
Manuscript due dates must be strictly observed. Whether the
conference volume will be published before or after the meeting, late
manuscripts run the risk of not being published in the Proceedings of
SPIE. The objective of this policy is to better serve the conference
participants and the technical community at large. Your cooperation is
 appreciated by all.

 Final Summary
Accepted authors will receive instructions for submission of the 200-
word Final Summary in their author kit. The published Final Summaries
will be available at the meeting.

 Oral or Poster Presentation
Accepted authors will receive instructions for Oral and Poster
presentations in their author kit. All Oral and Poster presentations are
included in the Proceedings of SPIE and require a manuscript.

 Proceedings of SPIE
These conferences will result in volumes published in the Proceedings of
SPIE that can be ordered through the Advance Technical Program.
Camera-ready manuscripts are required of all accepted applicants and
must be submitted in English by 2 November 1998. Copyright to the
manuscript is expected to be released for publication in the Proceedings
of SPIE. Note: If an author does not attend the meeting and make a
presentation, the chair may choose not to publish the author's
manuscript in the conference volume. Papers published are indexed in
leading scientific databases including INSPEC, Compendex Plus, Physics
Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, International Aerospace Abstracts, and
Index to Scientific and Technical Proceedings.

 Participant Registration Fee
Authors and coauthors are accorded a reduced symposium registration
 fee.
