EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE VISION IN VEHICLES BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, USA 22-25 AUGUST 1999 ANNOUNCEMENT & SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS The Eighth International Conference on Vision in Vehicles will be run in conjunction with the Applied Vision Association and the Ergonomics Society. This highly successful conference series was established in 1985. Vision is of paramount importance in vehicle control and visual information must be presented in a way that can be rapidly assimilated. This multi-disciplinary conference will provide an international forum for the exchange of information on current research encompassing all aspects of vision and its relationship to vehicle design. This includes both the internal and external design of the vehicle as well as the perceptual and cognitive capabilities and limitations of the vehicle controller. The scope of the conference will cover all types of vehicles (e.g. cars, trucks, trains, aircraft, helicopters, ships, military vehicles) where the task involves monitoring both in-vehicle displays and the surrounding visual environment in both day and night-time conditions. The conference will therefore be of interest to vehicle and instrument designers from any of the above industries, psychologists, ergonomists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, highway engineers, traffic planners, lighting engineers, legislators and anyone concerned with safety in vehicles. PAPERS Oral and poster presentations are invited. Topics covered will include: o Functional requirements of the driving task o Road transport informatics o External environment o Intelligent driver-support systems o Internal environment o Night myopia o Simulation/virtual reality o Driver's vision o Attention, cognitive & perceptual performance o Older drivers SYMPOSIA AND WORKSHOPS Proposals are welcomed for Symposia and Workshops.
