building conventional information systems, and many novel issues will need
to be addressed: query formulation, consistency management, indexing and
assessment of quality.

The conference will include, but is not restricted to, the following topics:
* Content-based indexing, search and retrieval
* Image databases
* Visual data modeling
* Visual information system architectures
* Feature (invariant) retrieval
* Picture representation languages
* Query models
* Optimization of pictorial queries
* Compression and image content
* Visualizing pictorial and non-pictorial information
* Hypermedia of picture and text
* Parallel processing in visual information systems
* Image crawling the web
* Picture book browsing
* Delivery of visual information
* Application areas of visual information systems
* Interactive segmentation
* Video databases
* Benchmarking

Visual Information Systems '99 has made a special arrangement with
the IEEE's Conference on Multi Media Computing and Systems,
ICMCS99 (http://www.dsi.unifi.it/~icmcs99), to be held on consecutive days from
June 7 - 11 in Florence.
There will be a special reduction in the fare when participating in both
conferences.

The conference is organized with the endorsement of
          IEEE (approval pending)
          IAPR (approval pending)
          the NVPHBV, the Dutch chapter of the IAPR
          TC12 for multi-media information processing of the IAPR
