"Analysis of Fluid Motion from Images"
Special issue of Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision

Fluid motion analysis is receiving more and more attention. This is due
to the increasing use of imaging sensors in experimental fluid
mechanics, the availability of sophisticated numerical image analysis
methods, and the definition of appropriate mathematical models. The
development of important applications, both long-standing and more
recent ones, is also of key interest in this context. Examples include
the processing of satellite image sequences in meteorology and
oceanography, bio-fluid imaging in the biomedical domain, or
experimental fluid visualization in aero- and hydrodynamics.
Furthermore, spatio-temporal image processing is a promising way to
support the analysis of complex physical fluid phenomena, in particular
the measurement and the understanding of turbulent flows.

The analysis of fluid motion from images raises several important
theoretical and applied issues related to applied fluid mechanics,
computational mathematics, information theory, pattern recognition,
image processing and computer vision. These issues encompass problems of
modeling, identification, estimation and segmentation, the solution of
which are necessary to define appropriate and efficient image analysis
tools for the computational evaluation of such difficult real fluid
image sequences.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- physical models exploitable for fluid image analysis,
- efficient fluid parameter identification from images,
- energy-based regularization of fluid inverse problems,
- large-scale optimization problems related to fluid image analysis,
- PDE-based fluid image analysis,
- modeling and computation of propagating interfaces,
- statistical approaches for fluid image analysis,
- computation of fluid velocity and deformation fields from images,
- extraction and tracking of the local fluid structures,
- measurement of physical quantities from images (vorticity,...),
- image processing-based evaluation of visualization of model
simulations,
- applications within the areas mentioned above.

The purpose and interest of this special issue is to provide an
attractive interdisciplinary forum for this challenging theme which
relies on the combination of physical models, mathematical analysis and
computational techniques.

Prospective authors are encouraged to submit high quality, original
works, which have not appeared, nor are under consideration, in any
other journals.
