Edited volume
"FUZZY FILTERS FOR IMAGE PROCESSING"

To be published in the International Series
"Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing"
(by Springer Verlag, Heidelberg, Germany)
=============================================

General description
===================

The application of fuzzy techniques in image processing is a promising
research field. Among the different topics, this book will focus on the
construction and application of fuzzy filters for image processing. It is
well known that fuzzy filters have a more robust performance than classical
filters. For example, most classical filters that remove noise
simultaneously blur the edges, while fuzzy filters have the ability to
combine edge-preservation and smoothing. Compared to other non-linear
techniques, fuzzy filters are able to represent knowledge in a
comprehensible way. Several researchers have already presented interesting
fuzzy filters with promising results. The aim of this book is to give an
extended survey of the current state-of-the-art and to indicate future
keypoints for research. We are convinced that the book will serve as an
important reference for scientists and practitioners in this area, and as an
inspiration for newcoming researchers.

List of topics
==============

Topics for the edited volume include:
 - Fuzzy filters for noise reduction (of various noise types),
 - Fuzzy filters for image enhancement,
 - Fuzzy filters for edge detection,
 - Other applications of fuzzy filters.

Call for chapters
=================

Interested authors are invited to submit a one page abstract for review
before October 19, 2001. The abstract should give a comprehensive summary of
the intended contribution. Electronic submission is encouraged.

After notification of acceptance, authors will be invited to submit full
chapters by December 21, 2001. Chapters should be written in English, with a
maximum length of about 30 pages. Detailed guidelines, as well as a sample
file, will be provided by the editors together with the notification
(guidelines are already available on our website).

Authors will also receive editor's comments by January 11, 2002. Final
chapters are expected by February 15, 2002. The publication of the book is
scheduled for July 2002.
