OBJECTIVE

With the growth of the Internet and developments in imaging technology,
very large digital image archives have been created and used in numerous
applications. Together with the increase in the number of pictorial
archives, demands are also growing for methodologies and techniques to
store and retrieve pictorial entities from large image archives. It is
known that colour provides powerful information for data analysis,
recognition and visualization. As a consequence, colour has become a center
of interest as a powerful tool in content-based image retrieval, opening
many new directions of research and technology.

TOPICS

In this special issue, we focus on the use of colour in the exploration of
image data repositories for the purpose of content-based image access. As
long as the primary focus is on colour, the special issue will include
the following topics:

+ Colour feature extraction
+ Colour image filtering
+ Colour image segmentation
+ Colour models and spaces
+ Colour-texture models
+ Combining colour and shape information
+ Colour invariance and colour constancy
+ Chromatic adaptation
+ Handling shadows and illumination
+ Physics-based matching
+ Perceptual-based indexing and retrieval
+ Compression of colour image content
+ Colour image indexing
+ Colour image classification
+ Colour-based feature selection
+ Applications (face, trademark, flowers etc.)
