CALL FOR PAPERS INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMPUTER VISION SPECIAL ISSUE ON CONTENT BASED IMAGE RETRIEVAL SUBMISSION: MARCH 1, 2002 Developments in hardware and sensor technology have enabled the formation of large image repositories. As a consequence, content-based image retrieval and other variations of accessing images in databases has become an urgent topic opening many new directions of research and technology. In this special issue, we aim to explore the fundamentally new possibilities of computer vision needed in the exploration of image data repositories, as well as the fundamentally new techniques of computer vision which have arisen from having large data sets available. Original papers are being solicited in the general area of the exploration and exploitation of the image content from large sets of data. The data may be as general as available on the Internet, or as specific as the images kept for breeding roses, but in all cases data sets will be large. The data may be accompanied by categorization, annotation, text, title or none of the above. Specific topics may include the following list of topics, but new concepts when substantiated by theoretical considerations or experimentation on a large data set are specifically invited: + Querying, searching and browsing images from their content; + Features and indexes for large general image data sets; + New, variant and invariant feature sets on color, shape and texture; + Automatic or interactive learning of specific feature sets for narrow domain data sets; + Mining and visualization the content of large image repositories; + The semantic gap between verbal descriptions and image properties; + Learning from partially categorized data sets or other sources of information; + Semantic, syntactic and other formal descriptors of image content; + Image formalization as a means to form image databases and image knowledge bases; + Similarity measures and measuring similarity; + The role of perception in content based retrieval; + Intelligent interaction and annotation on a large set of images; + The use of relevance feedback; + Fusion of visual information with other modalities for content-based retrieval; + Content preserving compression and content access in compressed form; + Theoretical papers discussing requirements for algorithms; + The classification of materials and surface properties by vision; + Novel concepts, techniques and applications when supported by theory or experimentation Prospective authors are encouraged to submit high quality, original works, which have not appeared, nor are under consideration, in any other journals. All manuscripts are subject to review. To be considered for this special issue, prospective authors should submit six (6) hardcopies of their complete manuscript by March 1, 2002 to Ms. Melissa Andersen, Kluwer Academic Publishers, 101 Philip Drive, Assinippi Park, Norwell, MA 02061; Tel: 781 871-6600; Fax: 617 871-6528; E-mail Melissa.Andersen@wkap.com. Please note on each submission: Special Issue on Content Based Image retrieval / International Journal of Computer Vision. All manuscripts should include a title page containing the following information: paper title, full name(s) and affiliation(s), complete postal and electronic address(es), and telephone and fax numbers of the author(s). In addition, the contacting author should be identified on the title page. Manuscripts should include a 300-word abstract and a list of keywords that identify the central issues discussed in the manuscript. Electronic submissions will not be accepted. Instructions for authors are regularly published in the Journal and may also be obtained from Ms. Melissa Andersen.
