CALL FOR PAPERS International Journal of Image and Graphics (IJIG) Special Issue on Deformable Models for Image Analysis and Pattern Recognition Guest Editors: Jian-Zhong Qian (Siemens Corporate Research) Dit-Yan Yeung (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) Deformable models are shape-varying models which provide the flexibility for modeling intra-class shape variations commonly found in many image analysis and pattern recognition problems. The past 10 to 15 years have witnessed major advances in deformable model research. On the theoretical side, a number of different models and the associated algorithms for addressing their computational aspects have been proposed. This topic has appealed to a number of serious researchers, largely due to its principled theoretical framework which overcomes the ad hoc nature of some previous methods. Besides having a strong theoretical foundation, deformable models have also found successes in many application areas, including medical image analysis, industrial inspection, handwriting recognition, face and gesture recognition, and other computer vision tasks. The goal of this Special Issue is to solicit and publish high-quality research papers that report original research on recent theoretical advances and novel applications in this topic. Issues of interest to this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following: Unifying framework Taxonomy/categorization of models Model representation Geometric invariance Model generation Model initialization Coarse-to-fine matching Bidirectional matching Model parameter learning Model topology adaptation Optimization criteria Regularization Convergence analysis Bayesian methods Fuzzy methods Dynamic graph matching Robust statistics Spatiotemporal models Mixture models Efficient implementation 3D detection and tracking 3D segmentation Novel applications Schedule: 16 September 2002 Paper due 15 January 2003 Acceptance notification 15 March 2003 Final paper due Submission Procedure: Authors should follow the paper preparation guidelines described at http://www.worldscinet.com/ijig/ijig.shtml. All submitted papers will be reviewed according to the guidelines and standards of the International Journal of Image and Graphics. Addresses for Submission: Papers should be sent directly to one of the editors. Electronic submission in PS or PDF format (only) via e-mail attachment is acceptable.
