CIVR'08 will include several special sessions in the technical program. Work presented in the special sessions is expected to represent the state-of-the-art, highlight the important emerging directions in image and video retrieval. Special sessions shall address areas that do not yet have enough critical mass to attract regular papers. These will usually be new or emerging areas in multimedia analysis and retrieval, but they may also be established areas that require more attention. Example topics include but are not limited to: tagging and retrieval in Web2.0, multimedia retrieval for domain-specific applications (e.g. bio-medical, surveillance, consumer), retrieval system user experience, collaborative retrieval systems, gaming, and mobile annotation and retrieval platforms. Each special session will consist of 5 invited papers. The organizers' role is to invite the speakers, process the reviews for their papers (with the same deadline and review system as the regular papers), and chair the session itself. It is encouraged that the session begins with an overview paper on the topic being addressed and remaining papers follow up with technical contributions on the topic. The following information should be included in the proposal: * Title of proposed session * An introduction stating the importance of the topic and the rationale for the proposed session. * Organizers (including brief bio and contact information) * Tentative/Confirmed list of invited papers (titles/affiliations/authors) * Important dates (i) The special session organizers will be responsible for the reviews (ii) The initial paper due date can be somewhat later than 1/28/08, but the camera-ready papers are due at the same time as others Proposals will be evaluated based on the timeliness of the topic, relevance to CIVR, the degrees to which they will bring together key researchers in the area, introduce the area to the larger research community, further develop the area, and potentials to establish a larger community around the area.. Please note that all papers in the proposed session will be reviewed to ensure the quality of the contributions. Once the proposal has been approved, the organizer(s) will organize the review process. Each paper should receive at least three reviews. The organizers send their recommendations to the Special Session Co-Chairs for final approval. If a significant number of the papers are rejected after peer-review for an approved Special Session, this Special Session may be cancelled. If a proposal is not accepted, papers in that proposal can still be submitted to the regular sessions =========================================== Submission Procedure for Special Sessions =========================================== Those who are interested in organizing a special session should submit a proposal adhering to the above requirements by email to Dr. Qi Tian at qitian@cs.utsa.edu and Dr. Lexing Xie at xlx@us.ibm.com. All the papers in the special sessions should follow the same style as the regular CIVR papers.
