ICVSS 2008 – RECONSTRUCTION AND RECOGNITION __________________________________________ --INTERNATIONAL COMPUTER VISION SUMMER SCHOOL 2008 -- Sicily 14-19 July 2008 www.dmi.unict.it/icvss icvss@dmi.unict.it -- MOTIVATION AND DESCRIPTION -- An essential and challenging problem in Computer Vision is the ability to infer the geometric structure and the semantic meaning of scenes, objects and surfaces captured by one or more cameras. Several theories and algorithms have been proposed to accurately reconstruct scene and object in an automatic way from still images and video. Recent studies have pointed out the importance of combining the reconstruction procedures with the recognition tasks in solving the problem of inferring satisfactorily the geometric structure of scenes and objects. The second edition of the International Computer Vision Summer School is aimed to provide an objective, clear and in-depth summary of the state-of-the-art research in 3D Reconstruction and Recognition of Scenes, Objects and Surfaces. The courses will be delivered by world renowned experts in the field, from both academia and industry, and will cover both theoretical and practical aspects in solving reconstruction and recognition for real application problems. The School is especially aimed to provide a stimulating space for researchers and Ph.D. Students. The participants will benefit from direct interaction and discussions with world leaders in computer vision and machine learning. Participants will have also the possibility to present the results of their research on the topic of the school, and to interact with their scientific peers, in a friendly and constructive environment. --SPEAKERS AND COURSES-- http://svg.dmi.unict.it/icvss2008/speakers&Syllabus.htm -- LECTURES -- Andrew Fitzgibbon Microsoft Research Ltd, Cambridge, UK Luc Van Gool ETH Zurich, Switzerland Jan Koenderink Utrecht University, Netherlands Andrew Zisserman University of Oxford, UK OTHER LECTURES ARE COMING SOON... -- ADVANCED TUTORIALS -- Carlos Hernández Toshiba Research Europe Ltd, Cambridge, UK George Vogiatzis Toshiba Research Europe Ltd, Cambridge, UK OTHER TUTORIALS ARE COMING SOON... -- ADVANCED RESEARCH SEMINARS -- Andrea Cavallaro Queen Mary, University of London, UK OTHER SEMINARS ARE COMING SOON... --LABORATORY, DEMONSTRATION, IMPLEMENTATION DETAILS-- Jamie Shotton Toshiba, Multimedia Laboratory, Corporate R&D Center Kawasaki, Japan OTHER LABORATORY ARE COMING SOON... -- STUDENT APPLICATION -- http://svg.dmi.unict.it/icvss2008/application.htm The school will be open to about 100 qualified, motivated and pre-selected candidates. Sicily is one of the most beautiful islands of the Mediterranean. The island is very rich in archeological sites from various Ancient Civilizations. The sea, weather, food and the wine are excellent. In particular Punta Sampieri - Scicli (RG) is located in the south east of Sicily in a late Baroque area called Val di Noto. The Val di Noto area is included in the Unesco World Heritage List and includes eight nearby towns: Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo, Ragusa and Scicli. The location of the school rises in the middle of an ample bay delimited on the west from Sampieri and on the east from a cliff, on which is founded an ancient furnace, rare example of industrial archaeology. The Hotel Village “Baia Samuele” stretches in a gentle slant to the beach: 120 thousand square meters delimited from rows of secular cypresses. An ultramodern village with an original architecture, pleasant design and all comforts you can imagine. The frame of plants and flowers, typical of this angle of Sicily, in front of the island of Malta, completes this gilded dream of the Mediterranean. -- School Committee -- Directors Roberto Cipolla, University of Cambridge, UK Sebastiano Battiato, University of Catania, IT Co-Directors Giovanni Maria Farinella, University of Catania, IT Giovanni Gallo, University of Catania, IT Lectures Andrew Fitzgibbon, Microsoft Research Ltd, Cambridge, UK Luc Van Gool, ETH Zurich, Switzerland Jan Koenderink, Utrecht University, Netherlands Andrew Zisserman, University of Oxford, UK Advanced Tutorials Carlos Hernández, Toshiba Research Europe Ltd, Cambridge, UK George Vogiatzis, Toshiba Research Europe Ltd, Cambridge, UK Advanced Research Seminars Andrea Cavallaro, Queen Mary, University of London, UK Laboratory, Demonstration, Implementation Details Jamie Shotton Toshiba, Corporate R&D Center Kawasaki, Japan Local Organizers IPLAB Staff, University of Catania, IT -- Enquiry and Information -- ICVSS 2008 WEB: www.dmi.unict.it/icvss ICVSS 2008 EMAIL: icvss@dmi.unict.it
