Call for Papers Fuzzy Techniques for Multimedia Information Retrieval Special session at WILF2011 - 9th International Workshop on Fuzzy Logic and Applications August 29-31, 2011 Trani, Italy http://wilf2011.di.uniba.it Multimedia information retrieval has recently emerged as an active research area in the application of fuzzy set theory. Effective multimedia information retrieval requires queries to include not only textual descriptions but also multimedia contents reflecting the nature of information to be searched, such as colors, sounds, shapes, etc... Fairly consolidated results were obtained in the area of content-based information retrieval (CBIR) aiming at indexing multimedia with their low-level content-based features. However CBIR applicability is hampered by the known problem of semantic gap, which is the gap between the low-level description of multimedia and their semantic interpretation given by humans. Current research on multimedia information retrieval is devoted to investigate how to fill the semantic gap, which still poses many challenges and open problems. Among these, the difficulty of users to express their interests in the form of well defined queries, the need of effective methods for the extraction of relevant features from multimedia objects, the definition of flexible similarity measures for matching multimedia objects, the automatic annotation of multimedia contents with semantic concepts. All these challenges can be addressed with the help of fuzzy techniques, which provide convenient mechanisms for both content-based and concept-based multimedia retrieval. Fuzzy information retrieval utilizes fuzzy sets to represent multimedia objects, membership degrees to quantify query term relevance, fuzzy logical operators to define queries, and fuzzy compatibility measures to assess the retrieval score of a multimedia object. The session will be devoted to explore the fundamental roles as well as practical impacts of fuzzy techniques in the field of multimedia information retrieval. Possible topics include (but are not limited to): - Fuzzy modeling of multimedia data - Fuzzy similarity measures for multimedia objects - Fuzzy labeling of multimedia objects - Semantic multimedia indexing and retrieval - Fuzzy processing of low-level features in multimedia - Fuzzy clustering of multimedia data - Fuzzy information retrieval models Organizers Giovanna Castellano, University of Bari, Italy - castellano@di.uniba.it Janusz Kacprzyk, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland - kacprzyk@ibspan.waw.pl Deadlines - Paper submission: February 4, 2011 - Notification of acceptance: March 5, 2011 - Final Submission and registration: March 15, 2011 - Congress Dates: August 29-31, 2011 If you are interested in taking part on this special session, please submit your paper directly through the WILF2011 webpage: http://wilf2011.di.uniba.it/index.php/submission All accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings (Springer-Verlag LNCS/LNAI).
