======= CALL FOR PAPERS: CHI Workshop on Human Computer Interaction in Third Places. HCI-3P ACM CHI 2013 Paris, France. April 27-28th. “Third places” are neither work or home; rather, they are places such as coffee shops and bars, where playful conversation shapes the social links that tie communities together. Emerging information and communication technologies (ICT) have introduced new ways to interact with such third places – i.e. geo-tagging, crowd-sourcing and passive sensing – changing how we interact with other people, and how contemporary communities are shaped. The goal of the first Workshop on Human Computer Interaction in Third Places (HCI-3P) (http://hci3p.com/call-for-participation/) is to better understand, through academic discussion and a field activity, the best approaches to designing ICT for third places. The outcomes of the workshop will be a research agenda, collaborative research proposals and the initiation of a recurring workshop on the topic. HCI-3P is scheduled as a two day workshop co-located with CHI2013. The first day will be dedicated to discussing the state of current research, while the second day will promote research collaboration through a field activity taking place on several Parisian third places. Submissions should describe ongoing research on novel interfaces, research methodologies, or research positions on human computer interaction for third places. If accepted, at least one author of the paper will need to attend the workshop. Attendees must register for the CHI-3P workshop and at least one (1) day of the conference. Submissions should be done following the CHI Extended Abstract Format (http://chi2013.acm.org/authors/format/). Email your paper in PDF format to roberto@robertocalderon.ca with subject HCI-3P by December 28th. Important Dates Submissions due: December 28th. Acceptance Notification: February 1st. Camera-ready due: February 15th. CHI-3P: April 27th - April 28th. (Please note at least one author of each accepted paper must register for the one or more days of the ACM CHI Conference and the workshop HCI-3P) TOPICS OF INTEREST HCI-3P will focus on the following topics, but similar topics and discussions will be welcomed for submission and discussion during the workshop. + Novel interfaces to support human interaction in third places + Natural and unobtrusive interfaces to support conversation within third places + Aesthetic approaches to public interfaces within third places + Crowd-computing in third places + Comparison of third places with different cultural rootings + Supporting third places in special communities (e.g. nomad, non-technical) + Virtual or hybrid (virtual/face-to-face) third places + Computing for third places in the developing world IMPORTANT DATES: Submission Deadline: December 28th.
