Research in Multimedia for Cultural Heritage covers a wide spectrum of topics in content analysis, content description, content retrieval and presentation to the user. Various tools and techniques from different fields such as Data Indexing, Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, and Human Computer Interaction have contributed to the success of multimedia systems. Although, there has been a significant progress in the field, too many systems are prototyped but never leave this early stage. The goal of this special issue is to bring forward the recent advancements in Multimedia with specific application to Cultural Heritage, where open and flexible platforms are needed, to allow building services that support use of cultural resources for research and education.
