Call for Papers

The ANNUAL INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE http://aris.ss.uci.edu/HIPLab/AIC/ will meet for the 39th time, February 2 - February 7, 2014 in Teton Village, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, at the Teton Mountain Lodge and Spa . The Lodge and Spa is a ski-in ski-out four-star luxury resort and is again offering a very attractive package in terms of price and facilities. The Conference begins with a reception on Sunday evening, February 2, at 5:30p followed by a half-session from 6:00-8:00p. Regular sessions meet from Monday (Feb 3) through Friday (Feb 7) at 4:00p to 8:00p; the rest of the day is free. After the last session on Friday, there is a banquet for participants and their guests. Paper submissions are hereby invited. Despite rumors that participation is by invitation (perhaps because of the high quality of the talks), the only way to participate as a speaker is to: (1) email a title and abstract to the AIC conference organizer (as per the web page registration form) on or before Friday, September 20, 2013 AND (2) complete the registration form at the AIC website http://aris.ss.uci.edu/HIPLab/AIC/RegistrationForm.php AND (3) send a check for the registration fee ($190; $250 after Oct 4, 2013; $95 for students) payable to AIC c/o Prof. George Sperling Department of Cognitive Sciences, SSPA-3 University of California Irvine, CA 92697-5100 Nonspeaking participants also must register and are welcome up to the capacity of the meeting room (50). In addition to the usual potpourri of submitted talks, three special groups of talks are being organized. If your proposed presentation falls into one of these areas, also send a copy of the title and abstract to the relevant organizer. Higher-Level Vision (Pizlo): Attention and Working Memory (Pasternak, Reynolds, Shevell): Attention: Theory and Psychophysics (Dosher, Lu): Conference registration includes daily snacks and refreshments, and the closing banquet. Applicants will be notified as soon as possible, and not later than Friday, September 27, 2013, of the acceptance of proposed presentations. Registration fees for speakers are nonrefundable after September 27, but they are refundable at any time for nonspeaking participants. The 38 previous programs, photos, and hotel information are published on the AIC website; the 2014 program will be posted as it becomes available. ----------------- The AIC covers a wide range of subjects in what has come to be called cognitive science, ranging from visual and auditory physiology and psychophysics to human information processing, cognition, learning and memory, to computational approaches to these problems including neural networks, artificial intelligence and, most recently, brain imaging. The aim is to provide overview talks that are comprehensible and interesting to a wide scientific audience -- such as one might fantasize would occur at a National or Royal Academy of Science. Teton Mountain Lodge & Spa, in Jackson Hole, is directly at the base of the ski slopes, a very short walk to the tram and other ski lifts. In addition to luxury "Lodge Rooms" sleeping 2-4 persons, the Conference has arranged to reserve the Lodge's entire block of "Alpine Suites" with fully-equipped kitchens at $159/night + extras, which is far less than the seasonal rate ($379/night +extras). THIS DEAL REQUIRES THE ROOMS TO BE RESERVED BEFORE OCTOBER 4. For more details see http://aris.ss.uci.edu/HIPLab/AIC/For_Participants.html Two other hotels are immediately adjacent to the Teton Mountain Lodge and Spa: the Hotel Terra and The Inn at Jackson Hole. Many other hotels, restaurants, ski rental facilities, shops, and cross-country ski trails are all within a short walk. There are frequent daily flights directly to Jackson Hole (JAC) from Denver and Salt Lake City, plus less frequent flights from Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and other major cities. Teton Village is a 40 min bus or taxi drive from Jackson Airport; alternatively it is a five-hour drive from Salt Lake City. Additional information about the conference, travel, and skiing opportunities, is available on the AIC webpage.
