Mobile Iris CHallenge Evaluation (MICHE I and II) Call for Papers

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- MICHE Special Executable Issues on "Mobile Iris CHallenge Evaluation (MICHE I and II)" to be published in the journal Pattern Recognition Letters Mobile biometrics technologies are nowadays the new frontier for secure use of data and services. Mobile biometric identification devices extend the functionality and capabilities of a traditional biometric identification system, by allowing capture of biometric traits in any place, and compare them against a biometric database, either stored locally on the device, or remotely in a central authentication system. Furthermore, captured information can also be compared with that stored within RFID tags, or smartcards or recent machine readable identification documents (IDs). Mobile biometric identification devices must be designed for intuitive operation, and incorporate all necessary equipment for the capture of one or more biometric traits. The captured data is converted by software into digital templates for storage and matching against other records, which are held in either a local or remote database. It is to consider that, notwithstanding the continuous advances in technology and resources, the ability to transfer all the phases of biometric processing on a mobile device calls for faster as well as lighter procedures, and for a more efficient storage strategy. Iris is a natural candidate for mobile biometric recognition for two main reasons: iris acquisition is little intrusive, and iris codes are among the less expensive templates from the storage point of view. However, present techniques must be suitably adapted to the mobile setting. These include detection, segmentation and coding, as well as matching steps. This special issue aims at collecting the most relevant contributions to the field in both academy and industry. (NEW) Prospective authors can submit their results related to one or all of the above steps. We strongly encourage the presentation of systems implemented on a mobile device (smartphone or tablet). The presentation of systems running on desktop computers is also welcome, given that the test dataset is acquired on a mobile device. Authors are required to provide the dataset they used for their experiments as well as the characteristics of the devices used for acquisition and testing. However, for authors convenience, a dataset will also be available at http://biplab.unisa.it/MICHE/database/. MICHE I IMPORTANT DATES (FIRST CALL FOR PAPER) Deadline for the submission to the first special issue and for dataset upload: April 18 2014 (NEW) First notification: July 31, 2014 Revised manuscript submission: September 30, 2014 Notification of final decision: November 15, 2014 In a second phase, namely MICHE II, the collected datasets will be used to build an integrated test-bed for a challenge which will be accessible for both original authors and new groups. Even in this phase, all participants will have to submit a software implementation of the proposed methods, together with all the parameterizations required to execute the software, and descriptive metadata that will be detailed in the upload page. The participants that achieve the best 8 results (see all the details at the evaluation page: biplab.unisa.it/MICHE) are invited to submit a paper to the second Special Issue. In particular, a maximum of 7500 words is admitted for special issue papers, without counting the References (plus at most 10 Figures/Tables in total).
