Special Session on Big Media Data Processing and Analysis

IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2015

27-30 September 2015, Quebec City, Canada

Visual media data are increasingly becoming ever bigger and stand as
one of the most important and valuable information source. They come
in many different heterogeneous forms, such as images, 2D video,
stereoscopic and multi-view video, 3D point clouds, meshes, etc and
associated metadata (tags, automatically extracted metadata). A number
of issues that are specific to the volume of these data arise, such as
big visual media data storage, search and retrieval, representation
and summarization, intelligent processing and analysis, coding and
transmission, etc. All these are hot research topics that pose
significant challenges regarding mainly the processing resources,
execution speed, accuracy and scalability. At the same time, all these
data are usually accommodated by rich metadata that, in many cases,
are themselves big. The growth of big social media networks poses
additional requirements on these aspects inducing ideas from
large-graph analysis and multimodal data processing and
analysis. Traditional treatment with single-core processors is not
adequate and research directions are usually pointing at fast,
incremental, approximate, distributed, parallel, multithreaded
solutions. This special session will collect papers presenting
state-of- the art approaches in these topics focusing on the big media
data aspects.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to big data methods for:

· Big visual media information summarization and representation:
sampling, quantization, representation and rendering, quality
assessment;

· Big visual media storage, retrieval, and authentication: visual
media databases, search and retrieval, indexing;

· Semantic analysis and scene understanding in big 3D and multiview
video content (event detection, segmentation, indoor/outdoor scene
classification, shot type classification, face/human detection and
tracking, human activity recognition, face recognition, facial
expression recognition, object detection/recognition)

· Visual media on the web: social media, media recommendation, media
tagging, etc

· Big visual media coding and transmission;

· Big visual media processing: filtering, restoration and enhancement,
segmentation, tracking, stereoscopic and 3D processing, feature
extraction and analysis, interpolation and super-resolution, color and
multispectral processing, biometrics;

· Big image data formation (high resolution, dynamic range, frame
rate): UHDTV, Biomedical imaging, remote sensing, geophysical and
seismic imaging, optimal imaging, synthetic-natural hybrid image
systems;

· Applications: Media creation and post-production, Web media search
and retrieval, Biomedical sciences, Geosciences & remote sensing,
Astronomy & space exploration, Document image processing and analysis,
other applications.

Interested authors can find submission information at:
http://www.icip2015.org/papersubmission.html

Submission of manuscripts to this special session will be done through
the Conference submission system. During submission, the authors
should select as one of the two EDICS the topic “9.9 Big Media Data
Processing and Analysis”. All received papers will be peer-reviewed
following the usual reviewing standards and the best manuscripts will
be included in the special session, while other good quality
contributions will be transferred to regular sessions if they pass the
acceptance threshold .

This special session has been proposed and is organized by
Prof. Ioannis Pitas and Prof. Anastasios Tefas in the framework of the
European Union Seventh Framework Programme

(FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement number 316564 (IMPART)
